Hingurukaduwa is a beautiful and remote village in the Monaragala District of Sri Lanka. The low income levels in the area are a far cry from the rest of the country, and the children lack basic educational facilities. Lak Aruna Foundation was initiated in 2002 by a young educated villager with a vision – Janak Sirimal. From 12 students using a donated computer at the start, the foundation has now grown to over 400 students learning computer studies, maths and English.
Lak Saviya Foundation has been supporting Lak Aruna Foundation since 2006 in various ways including: provision of computers, books, teachers’ salaries, improving library facilities, and funding for an administrator to ensure good governance. In February 2013, Lak Saviya Foundation purchased a land and constructed a modern building to operate the Education Centre at a cost of A$46,000.
